1906 | The Beginning of a Historic San Antonio Hotel

In 1906, Veronica Felix entered into a construction contract with builder J.P. Haynes, marking the beginning of what would become one of San Antonio’s most enduring historic hotels. Built for a cost of $18,225 and completed in just over five months, the Fairmount Hotel quickly became a notable presence in downtown San Antonio. While little is known about Felix personally, historical records show she remained closely involved with the Fairmount property for nearly a decade.

1914–1932 | Growth, Transition & Preservation

As the city evolved, so did the Fairmount. In 1914, Felix secured a deed of trust to fund improvements to the property before selling the hotel to George Saur in 1915 for $25,000. Ownership changed hands again in 1928, and following a series of challenges during the early 1930s, the Saur family ultimately regained control and settled the remaining mortgage in 1932, preserving the hotel during a period of economic uncertainty.

1944–1969 | A Downtown Landmark Changes Hands

By the mid-20th century, the Fairmount continued its role as a downtown San Antonio landmark. The Kelfer family, who had operated a furniture store on the hotel’s lower level, purchased the building in 1944-45. Ownership later passed to William Sinkin in 1969 and then to the Joske’s Brothers Business, reflecting the ongoing commercial and cultural shifts shaping downtown San Antonio during this era.

1986 | A Guinness World Record Moment

One of the most defining moments in the Fairmount’s history came in 1986, when the hotel was famously relocated to preserve its historic structure. Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest structure ever moved on wheels, the Fairmount reopened on September 5, 1986. The relocation included an addition to the original structure, resulting in the 37-room boutique hotel guests experience today. It’s recent past includes ownership by B.K. Johnson of King Ranch.
